Hi welcome to my series on how to start loving Windows 11 now that it's time for Windows 10 to say bye 👋🏻. Until 14th of October I will explore Windows 11 features and functionality 💗.

In my 9th. Blog post in my Windows 11th series. I just wanna share a neat little trick. Did you know that my last blog post and this as well, is actually being written by me talking to my computer? Yeah, you read it correctly. So instead of me typing with my hands, I am sitting here casually in my sofa "writing" with my voice. And today I want to share all of the different things you can do with the lovely command WIN + H. This is the blog post on how to dictate with Windows + H in Windows 11:

Why should I use my voice for typing instead of the keyboard?

Well, why not? Sometimes it can be easier to use your voice instead of the keyboard. It can be quicker, with less typos, make it sound more natural as speech often is more relaxed, and sometimes your hands are just busy (drawing, knitting 🧶 e.g.). And it is very accessible making "writing" available for those with using their hands 🙏🏻.

How to dictate with Windows + H in Windows 11 and available features

You reach dictation by pressing Windows button + H. And you can use it anywhere there is text input such as writing files, talking to Copilot or googling.

You simply click the microphone and start talking and that's it you are ready to go.

There are a few settings to make sure that your experience is as you please:

Available settings for dictation

  • Voice typing launcher: With this setting, every time you're in a text box and click Windows and H, you will automatically start to dictate. Otherwise you will have to click the little microphone button.

  • Automatic punctuation: This will make sure that punctuation is added automatically to your text. This could be nice to give your text a better flow. But I would suggest that you, no matter what, always verify your text afterwards.

  • Filter profanity: If you have this toggled on dictation will not add profane language, I prefer to have everything that I say added and then of course I will verify afterwards 😎. But if you want the text to be cleaner, this is a great setting.

  • Select Default microphone: If you have several microphones always plugged in, this is for you to make sure that you know which microphone to use. Here you will also have a direct link to all your microphone settings, which is good. If you use more than one microphone.

  • Give feedback: If you have any feedback related to this feature, you can click here and directly be able to add feedback. I really encourage all of you to always add feedback if you have an idea, suggestions, or things that aren't working 😇!!

  • Microsoft Speech Services: Not available at the moment if you're using a work or school account.

Other good to know things

Another nice thing to know is that there are many different voice typing commands available. Such as:

  • Stop listening which will stop the dictation

  • Delete that to delete the last spoken word or phrase

  • Press enter to enter

To get ahold of all the different available voice commands in your language I recommend that you look at the Microsoft link here: Use voice typing to talk instead of type on your PC - Microsoft Support

My thoughts

I'm sad I didn't start using this earlier. YOU must all try it!!
